Young Learners (YLE)

Tests for children aged 7 to 12. They test English language skills of primary school students at three levels: Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers.

Who it is for

Young Learners exams test the knowledge of both spoken and written English, while monitoring children’s progress in language learning and encouraging them to continue working on it.

Pre A1 Starters

The first of the three Young Learners exams, testing children’s language skills and their freedom to speak English. It tests four basic skills in a simple and pleasant way. It is most often taken by children aged 7 to 8, who have about 100 hours of English lessons behind them.

During an exam your child will have to:

  • name colours in English
  • answer a very simple question about themselves
  • write a one-word answer to a simple question

A1 Movers

A1 Movers is the second Young Learners exam. This is the next step in monitoring your child’s progress in English by testing their skills in the four basic language skills. Including their freedom to speak English in simple everyday situations. It encourages further language learning and strengthens self-confidence. It is also the first serious success in life! It is most often taken by children aged 8 to 11, who have had about 175 hours of English lessons behind them.

During an exam your child will have to:

  • understand basic instructions in English
  • fill in a simple form or answer questions about themselves
  • answer questions and write down simple information (e.g. days of the week, time or names) that they will hear or read in a children’s story

A2 Flyers

A2 Flyers exam is the last and most advanced of the three Young Learners exams. This test shows that your child is able to master everyday spoken and written English language at a basic level. It is usually taken by children aged 9 to 12, who have been learning English as a second language at school for about 2-3 years, which is about 250 hours of English lessons.

During an exam your child will have to:

  • explain the differences between two stories or pictures
  • write or tell a short story in English
